As a teenager, Mabey Canyon was just another cool place to go party. We would drive up the road which goes into the hills of the Cleaveland National Forest. We wouldn't go all the way up the dirt road, we would just go to where the paved road ends and the road kind of opens up there. Its really secluded so all of us teens were able to go back there and party. So if it was the weekend and we wanted to find something to do or find some of our friends we would go to Mabey Canyon. There was always something going on there. We would drink and do what teenagers do up there. It was also like a lovers lane. A great make out spot. It was and probably is still used by teens for this purpose.
In the day time, I also would go up and explore the road. I went to high school with the girl who lived at the house way back in the canyon. Her dad is a doctor who also delivered me when I was born. But thats besides the point. Many times I had gone up the dirt road to see the wall of old cars. If you are driving into the canyon the cars are on your left side. Those old cars were probably taken from a junk yard and were used to build a retaining wall that is next to a seasonal stream. I think it is to keep the dirt road from being washed out. The many times I explored the place I never saw any dogs. The cars look creepy but cool as they are stacked together on their sides. The wall of cars goes into the canyon a ways back. Some of those cars were obvisouly from bad accidents and just looking at them gives you a very strange vibe. That whole canyon has a strange vibe.
Last week, Monday Feb. 15, 2010 I went back again to explore this place and do some photography of those old cars. A cousin and a friend were with me and I drove far back. I was disappointed to find that a lot of the cars can no longer be seen. They are still there just covered under mounds of dirt. Years of weather has covered them and only bits of the cars can be seen. I decided to drive even farthur back, farthur then I had ever gone before and way back on the road many cars could be seen. I took many pictures. The cars are all mostly rusted and dirt has collected on top of the wall of cars and vegitation is starting to take over. Still much of it could be seen. The season stream along side the retaining wall of cars was flowing and it made an errie yet tranquil site. We were very near the house but there were no dogs that came out to bother us. I got many great shots of the old cars.
The ranch styled house way back in the canyon has new owners I think. I drove to the front of their house which is surrounded by large white fences and did a U-turn so I could head back down the narrow road of Mabey Canyon. There was a sign on front of the house that said so and so's Horse Stables. So who ever lives there in that ranch styled house now has horses back there. When we left my cousin and friend were both a bit frightened by the eeriness of the place and although I wasn't scared I even had to admit that there is a really weird vibe out amounst those old cars.
